Vail Valley rents mixed bags for local companies

Like housing, recruitment is a long-term challenge in Vail Valley. For some companies, today’s challenges are greater than in the past.
At EagleVail’s Leadfoot Linda car repair shop, store manager Jeff Roberts said that as of May 11, there were only two mechanics on duty. The third mechanic resumed work on May 12 after recovering from the second COVID-19 vaccine.
Roberts said that Leadfoot Linda’s may use two other mechanics in a busy store, and that the factory is currently working in about two weeks.
Roberts said: “We couldn’t find qualified applicants.” “We couldn’t find real applicants at all.”
At the same time, Eagle’s R&H Mechanical is close to historical busyness. Tim Braun, general manager of Manger, said the company will handle the priority list and can quickly find those in need.
Dave & Matt Vans uses the new Ram ProMaster van to produce custom recreational vehicles. Like most companies in any field of entertainment, Dave & Matt Vans became very busy last year.
Co-founder Matt Felser said the company had only about 6 employees a year ago. The Gypsum-based company now has 25 employees, and Felser said he hopes to hire another five in the next month or so.
Felser said: “Last summer and fall, we had great success in hiring.” He pointed out that the company hired many other positions of leave.
Others came to Gypsum from outside the state. Three of these new employees are in their own trucks, so they have a place to live while looking for housing.
Despite the recent decline in applications, Felser said that the bigger problem is the increasing number of vans. The shortage of computer chips has slowed the delivery of a variety of vehicles, including trucks.
“Because we were lucky last year, we built a culture and community,” Fairs said. “Now, other people are very interested in working for us.”
At the Westin Riverside in Avon, Human Resources Director Tina Petersen said that the hotel has recovered from last year’s vacation and is currently well-staffed in the summer.
Peterson has worked in the valley for more than ten years. She is familiar with the recruitment challenges faced by many companies.
Peterson said: “There is always a problem with hiring employees in the valley.” He added that this year does not seem to be much trouble than in the past.
Peterson added that Marriott is currently launching an internship program that will bring high school and college students to the hotel. Peterson said that these interns will do more than just “drink coffee,” and all these interns will work in various parts of hotel operations and will eventually enter their careers.
The prospect of career tracking jobs also drew people to Nelson Nelson (RA Nelson), one of the largest construction companies in the valley. Like other companies in the industry, the company is now in a historically busy state.
RA Nelson President Travis Bossow said the company has been able to recruit people from outside the area who decide to live in Colorado.
“We didn’t do anything incredible,” Bosso said. “People are tired of the grind of big cities and want to go to Colorado.”
Bosso admits that moving to the mountain has a price. Salaries are usually not as good as in big cities, where the cost of living is usually higher.
RA Nelson can work with professional companies that provide benefits. Bosso said this helps attract the right people to work.
In fact, because Nelson Nelson (RA Nelson) is able to expand its production capacity and is looking for projects to be carried out in November and December, the company is well staffed.
Jim Pavelich is familiar with the ebb and flow of recruitment in the valley. Pavelich, the founder of Vail Daily, currently owns Northside Coffee & Kitchen and Southside Benderz in Avon, and Northside Grab & Go in Vail. Pavelich will open a new restaurant in the former Blue Plate Bistro in Avon this summer.
“So far, everything is fine,” Pavelch said of the company’s personnel needs. Pavelich admitted that these restaurants will hire soon, because most people expect this to be a busy summer.
Pavelvic said: “Then we will find out information about the state of the workforce.” “Our fingers are crossed.”
