Starbucks CEO: Mobile Ordering and Drive-Thrus Are Driving New-Store Growth

0x0

Starbucks has been a big believer in mobile ordering, and now it’s taking the next step by opening its first-ever mobile-only store.

The coffee chain announced Tuesday that it will open a “digital store” in Shanghai in late September. The location will be located inside the company’s Roastery and Tasting Room, and will only be accessible through the Starbucks app.

The store is part of a larger plan by Starbucks to increase its digital sales by 30% this year. More than 90% of new store growth going forward for Starbucks will feature drive-thrus, with the majority of those being mobile order and pay.

“If you look at the quick-service restaurant industry, it’s still growing very fast,” said Howard Schultz, Starbucks chairman and CEO. “There’s no question that there are challenges out there, but the fact is that consumer needs have not changed. They want good food and beverages for their families to enjoy.”

Starbucks drive-thrus are like the McDonald’s McCafé mobile order and pay mobile app on steroids, but instead of doing away with the drive-thru entirely, Starbucks is looking to expand their existing locations.
